The behaviour of a non-uniform beam loaded by a parallel or tangential compressive force, respectively, is analyzed by exploiting a two-degree- of-freedom dynamic model. The same system has been analyzed previously by \textit{G. E. Lee} and \textit{E. Reissner} [ibid. 26, 839-841 (1975; Zbl 0318.73038)] from a static point of view and by \textit{A. Neer} and \textit{M. Baruch} [ibid. 28, 735-740 (1977; Zbl 0374.73050)] by a dynamic approach using a one-degree-of-freedom model. The previous analyses revealed only part of the phenomena by the present approach. Here, for the tangential force a classical flutter instability is obtained and for the parallel force only static instability is possible.
