The author gives an alternative characterization of the extension principle of \textit{L. A. Zadeh} [Inf. Sci. 8, 199-249 (1975; Zbl 0397.68071), ibid. 8, 301-357 (1975; Zbl 0404.68074), ibid. 9, 43-80 (1975; Zbl 0404.68075)] using relations to represent mappings. Using this characterization, a methodology for extending mappings from points to fuzzy sets is given.
