Parallel with the difference schemes approximating the convective equation with constant coefficients the modified equations are considered [another name in the literature is the differential approximation; cf. the reviewer, The method of differential approximation (1979; Zbl 0495.65040); Engl. transl. (1983; Zbl 0511.65067)]. Estimates for the difference between the difference solution and the solution of the modified equations after multiple time steps are given. These estimates show that the modified equation may be a model of local errors.
