Using the integral equation formulation of the wave equation in the presence of a source, the author shows the existence of solution by the contraction mapping principle. He then applies it to obtain the wave field in the presence of a scattering volume of random nature. The application of existence of solution in unbounded medium to that bounded by a random layer is, however, not very obvious.
