We consider the ``modifiable area unit problem'' and its connection with the ``spatial autocorrelation problem''. The classical statistical results are briefly reviewed and extended to two cases so far neglected: (i) Case of partially overlapping zoning on the spatial system (e.g. market areas). (ii) Case of the aggregation of spatially autocorrelated observations.
