The author points out that what was novel in John Arbuthnot's paper in the Philosophical transactions of the Royal Society of 1710 was his attempt to provide a statistical proof of his assertions based on a quantitative concept of chance, with the argument expressed in numerical terms. The effects of Arbuthnot's arguments on 'sGravesande and Niklaus [Nicholas] Bernoulli is described. [An additional relevant reference to the present study would have been: \textit{A. P.
