Being motivated by a theorem of G. Birkhoff stating that there is a one- to-one correspondence between geometric lattices and simple matroids, the author of the present paper investigates some similar situations for the case of larger classes of atomistic lattices and clutters, respectively. In a way this paper is a continuation of another author's paper [ibid., 271-282 (1986; see the above review)].
