Let G be a subgroup of the symmetric group \(S_ n\) or of the alternating group \(A_ n\) and \(\chi\) be an ordinary character of \(S_ n\) (of \(A_ n)\). Using the classification of finite simple groups the author describes all pairs (\(\chi\),G) where the restriction of \(\chi\) to G is irreducible.
