In this 2nd part of the two-part article the author discusses alternate finite element formulations based on variational methods other than the Ritz method which is described in the first part [ibid. 16, 1341-1376 (1985; reviewed above)]. After reviewing the classical variational methods, weighted-residual method involving the Galerkin model, collocation model and least squares model are described. First- and second-order equations in one dimension are treated with a number of examples.
