We consider some linear and nonlinear problems for viscoelastic rods. Results obtained by \textit{M. E. Gurtin}, \textit{V. J. Mizel} and \textit{D. W. Reynolds} [J. Appl. Mech. 49, 245-246 (1982; Zbl 0484.73037)] for the linear case are affirmed more elemantarily and simply here. We also treat the linear problem with damping terms and the nonlinear problem with power nonlinearity. Some new results are established.
