The paper presents the development of the equilibrium finite elements for limit analysis and optimization problems and deals with discretization of the nonlinear yield criterion of thin-walled elastic-plastic structures like thin shells of bending plates. The integral form of the yield criterion for both surface and line finite elements is suggested. The problems of the limit load and of the optimization of an axisymmetric spherical shallow shell under monotonically increasing loading are considered.
