The paper discusses Frege's unusual view that an inference cannot be made unless the premiss is known to be true. It argues that this is an integral part of Frege's epistemology of mathematics; and though it is possible to defend it against simpler charges of psychologism, it is ultimately inconsistent with Frege's views on the nature of his axioms.
