Algorithms are described for specially structured large generalized eigenvalue problems arising in linear response theory for real wave functions. The algorithms are similar to the Lanczos and conjugate gradient methods generalized to generalized eigenvalue problems. Only few eigenvalues are required and obtained by exploiting the structure of the pencil. Numerical examples are given.
