A modification of the Marquardt method is combined with a Galerkin finite element method to produce an efficient algorithm for the solution of the steady-state Navier-Stokes equation at moderate Reynolds numbers. The algorithm is shown to be 3 to 4 times faster than more conventional algorithms based on the modified Newton method with loading on the nonlinear term. Numerical results are presented for a 4:1 contraction at Reynolds numbers in the range 400-1000 and for problems varying in size from 1107 to 3576 equations.
