The authors present an original approach to the construction of the Poincaré-Cartan forms in the variational calculus on the higher order velocity bundles with an arbitrary number of parameters. The basic tools for such a construction are some ideas from the generalized almost tangent geometry, which are collected in their book [Generalized classical mechanics and field theory (North-Holland Math. Studies 112) (1985; Zbl 0581.58015)].
