A classical theory directed towards quark confinement is developed. As well as a ``natural'' metric, an induced one is introduced by adding a (negative) multiple of the outer square of the gradient of a scalar field. This is formulated in terms of a Lagrangian density which is the sum of two terms, one depending only on the scalar field and the natural metric, the other on the induced metric and any other fields involved. Various detailed examples are worked out.
