It is proposed to understand the role of torsion in unified field theories and to connect it more clearly with the conservation of angular momentum by giving more geometrical structure to the manifold in the form of the structure group SU(2) for the principal fibre bundle. It is claimed that the resultant theory is more in line with the holistic notions of Mach, Faraday and Weyl (and Mendel Sachs) than with Yang-Mills and so on.
