The authors introduce the parallel Schwarz overrelaxation method for the solution of a linear system \(Ax=f\) of algebraic equations, a method which is motivated by the domain decomposition algorithm for solving boundary value problems. The convergence properties of this method are discussed under different assumptions on A. Finally, the properties of the Schwarz overrelaxation method are demonstrated by an example arising from the finite difference approximation of a one-dimensional boundary value problem.
