The authors present two finite difference schemes of order two resp. four for solving the eigenvalue problem \((py'')''+qy=\lambda ry,\quad y(a)=y''(a)=y(b)=y''(b)=0.\) The schemes are obtained by using the fact that the problem can be splitted in two equations of second order. Numerical examples are given.
