The problem of hypersonic flow around a sharp-nosed slender body is studied for plane or axisymmetric conditions with the assumption that there exists a shock layer in which the density of the gas is very big. A slightly changed Shvez's method [\textit{M. E. Shvez}, Prikl. Mat. Mekh. 13, 257-266 (1949; Zbl 0041.542)] is used to find a zero-order and first- order approximation. Whereas Chernyi's method [\textit{G. G. Chernyi}, Gas flow at high supersonic velocity (1959; Zbl 0090.413) on pp. 125-139] is not applicable for the case \(\gamma =1\), the proposed method remedies this weakness.
