The author gives an explicit representative of a given position integer as the sum of 4 squares via a continued fraction construction, generalizing a similar construction of Hermite for representations of primes \(\equiv 1 mod 4\) as sum of two squares. In the case under consideration continued fractions in the domain of Gaussian integers are used as well as results of A. Auric (1902) about them.
