We characterize the isometries from C(X) into C(Y) where X and Y are compact metric spaces. We give necessary and suficient conditions on an isometry from a subset of C(X) into C(Y) to have an extension to the whole space. It is also shown that an almost isometry from the unit ball of C(X) into the unit ball of C(Y) is near to an isometry.
