The author establishes that at any prime p, the classifying space of a compact, connected, simple Lie group has no nontrivial retracts. The result follows from the corresponding algebraic result in K-theory with coefficients in the p-adic integers as a \(\lambda\)-ring. It cannot be established using singular cohomology over the Steenrod algebra alone.
