The articles of this volume will not be indexed individually. In conventional man-machine systems, the intellectual functions of monitoring, planning, problem solving and decision making are carried out by the operator. Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) offer the possibility to support the human operator in these intellectual functions and to improve the performance of the man-machine system. In this seminar, the state of the art in those domains of AI relating to man-machine systems is reviewed and several selected examples of applications are discussed.
