A necessary condition for a *-derivation of a \(C^*\)-algebra to be extendible to a generator of a strongly continuous one parameter group of automorphisms is given. This condition is related to the ``well-behaved'' condition of \textit{S. Sakai} [Lect. Notes Math. 650, 85-122 (1978; Zbl 0392.46040)] and in some sense generalizes it. The generalization proves to be essential only in the non-commutative case.
