The familiar concept of the Cartan-Poincaré form for the classical first- and second-order multiple integral variational problem is introduced by using the ideal of non-holonomic contact differential forms in local coordinates. Besides the common Noether theorem, no subtler topics (e.g., the concept of regularity of the variational problem, the geometrical meaning of the concepts, globalization, etc.) are mentioned.
