These remarks were intended to introduce a round table discussion on ``Interpretation of grades of membership'' at the first IFSA Congress 1985. Accordingly, it is a collection of questions and remarks regarding open problems of an intuitively satisfactory foundation for the theory (or theories?) of fuzzy sets. The paper is recommendable as a provocative source of some main problems for a field that needs further clarification.
