This paper intends to prove a local-in-time existence and uniqueness theorem for the Vlasov-Maxwell equations. Some previous proofs exist using Kato's semigroup theory for linear symmetric hyperbolic equations [see \textit{T. Kato}, Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 58, 181-205 (1975; Zbl 0343.35056)]. Here the author uses a theory developed specifically for linear transport equations of the Vlasov-Maxwell type and based on more elementary methods.
