We prove the existence of maximal hypersurfaces in an asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetime satisfying a global barrier condition. The gradient estimate used in the proof does not need the uniform estimate of lapse functions of spacetimes under an a priori decay of height functions of spacelike hypersurfaces.
