In the last twelve years two non-equivalent definitions of a fuzzy topology have appeared in the literature. The first is the \textit{C. L. Chang} definition [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 24, 182-190 (1968; Zbl 0167.510)] and the second is the \textit{R. Lowen} definition [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 56, 621-633 (1976; Zbl 0342.54003)]. The authors argue for the superiority of the latter by collecting results and examples in which the Lowen definition is more natural or more satisfactory. Their general theme: the Chang definition allows many pathologies which might cause an investigator to overlook interesting results and applications.
