The application of the mixed finite element method to a highly nonlinear Dirichlet problem, which arises in the field of oceanography and elasticity is studied and new results involving error estimates are presented. As a special case, the well known error estimates for the corresponding linear and mildly nonlinear elliptic boundary value problems are derived.
