In this paper the authors consider a generalized biharmonic equation with matrix coefficients and homogeneous boundary conditions. This equation provides the basis of several important applications in problems of hydrodynamic stability. There is a unified mathematical treatment of at least a subclass of these problems by means of this equation, the applications differing only in the choice of the matrices involved. Known as well unknown results are obtained as a consequence of this unified approach.
