In this paper we show how the results of \textit{H. S. Qin} [Comput. Math. Appl. 12, 1171-1182 (1986; Zbl 0607.34011)] on bifurcation from multiple eigenvalues are in fact a simple consequence of the classical theorem of \textit{H. G. Crandall} and \textit{P. W. Rabinowitz} [J. Funct. Anal. 8, 321- 340 (1971; Zbl 0219.46015)] on bifurcation from simple eigenvalues.
