This is the full paper with proofs of the author's exact determination of the relations between degree of approximation by splines with free nodes and rational functions. The results have been announced in Constructive theory of functions, Proc. Int. Conf., Varna/Bulg. 1984, 672-674 (1984; Zbl 0616.41014)] and are an improvement of Acta Math. Hung. 44, 61-83 (1984; Zbl 0596.41028) which has an \(\epsilon\)-gap in the statement.
