The paper deals with the contact problem in elastostatics with nonlocal friction laws, in particular with the variational inequality formulation given by \textit{J. T. Oden} and \textit{E. B. Pires} [Contact problems in elastostatics with nonlocal friction laws. TICOM Report 81-12, Univ. Texas, Austin (1981)]. For finite element approximations of the solution the error estimate is investigated. The author presents a refined error estimate in the energy norm.
