The creeping flow of a viscoelastic fluid in a two-dimensional wedge of which one plate is stationary and the other being stretched at a rate proportional to the distance from the wedge apex has been shown to be Newtonian in character. An existence proof for slightly non-Newtonian fluids is also provided. It is shown that the stress field is multivalued at the wedge apex and the pressure field is logarithmically singular there. Furthermore, the strength of this singularity increases with the Weissenberg number.
