A discussion of the periodic operating conditions of pulse-width modulation (PWM) systems is given. The basis of the discussion is constituted by a block scheme of a PWM system whose characterizing parameters satisfy an integral equation. The analysis is carried out separately for the PWM of the first and of the second kind. For these two cases the period equations are established, and some estimates of their roots are presented. Then their existence and uniqueness domains are given. Finally, an example of application is presented. We think the paper is mathematically well elaborated and will be of high interest for those working in the area of PWM.
