The author gives a quite comprehensive state-of-the-art overview for the problem of identifying spatially varying coefficients in elliptic differential operators. The fundamental problems of identifiability, stability and numerical estimation are addressed; in particular, the paper brings a nice brief introduction into the presently used numerical techniques. The paper gives newcomers in the field and applied engineers a good starting point for both further research and practical application.
