The authors find an approximation of the critical eigenvalue of the neutron transport integral equation for a homogeneous medium by means of a variational procedure where the trial functions are the space asymptotic solutions of the direct and adjoint problems. Numerical results are also obtained, which show the computational advantages of the technique.
