Elementary stochastic notions have been found in the commentary on Dante's `Divina Comedia', written by Jacopo Giovanni della Lana in the years 1324-1328, and not in that of 1477 by Benevenuto Rambaldi da Imola, as referred by several historians (as L. E. Maistrov 1980). The problem of the three dice is treated by partition of the sum in three summands but all authors fail to permute them in order to get equipossibility. Other remarkable commentaries are the Ottimo Commento of 1334 by a friend of Dante and that by Francesco da Buti in 1385, and later by Giovanni da Serravalle 1416/17 in Latin.
