A normal mode analysis is used to determine the stability of a set of mixed hyperbolic/elliptic equations. The analysis is illustrated for a finite difference solution of the two-dimensional incompressible Euler equations on a rotating reference frame. The normal modes have a boundary layer structure which simplifies the analysis. One unstable and two stable sets of boundary conditions are analysed and the analysis results are confirmed with numerical experiments.
