The authors consider a tandem system of two servers, both with infinite waiting room. The first component has Poisson input and arbitrarily distributed service times; the service times at the second server are exponentially distributed. Via the solution of a functional equation in two variables a complicated but closed form expression is obtained for the generating function of the joint queue length distribution in steady state.
