Approximations for waiting time in GI/G/1 systems (Q1108683)

The Sokolov procedure is described and used to obtain an explicit and easily applied approximation for the equilibrium waiting time distribution in the FIFO GI/G/1 queue. The approximation appears to produce results within a few percent of the exact solution. Specific waiting time approximations for a PH/PH/1 and an M/D/1 queue are compared to the exact solutions with close agreement.
