The equilibrium statistical mechanics of systems whose Lagrangian is a homogeneous convex function of the generalised velocities is studied. If the related Hamiltonian vanishes in a certain region of phase space the partition function becomes a phase-space volume or in a quantum system a number of quantum states W. k ln W is then the entropy for such a system.
