A variational formulation is given to an axisymmetric contact problem with unknown boundary. The finite element method is used for solving the variational inequalities. Piecewise linear finite basic functions on a triangular grid are employed for numerical realization. The indentation of an elastic cylinder by a paraboloidal punch is considered as an example.
