The article gives a complete and coherent exposition of \textit{O. E. Lanford}'s [Astérisque 40 (1976), Int. Conf. Dyn. Syst. Math. Phys., Rennes 1975, Sept. 14-21, 117-137 (1977; Zbl 0353.70020), and Probab. Proc. Symp. pure Math., Urbana 1976, 87-89 (1977; Zbl 0379.60097)] derivation of the Boltzmann equation. It also includes a new proof of the BBGKY hierarchy and the analysis of the corresponding series expansion.
