A very general cost mechanism for a maintained system is considered with the expected total discounted cost as target function. It is shown that there is a simple cost relationship between the age replacement policy (replacement occurs whenever an operating unit reaches a certain age) and the block replacement policy (replacement occurs at fixed calendar time intervals).
