A mixture of two loss functions (with identical or different scale parameters) is proved to have the topology of the cusp catastrophe under certain conditions. The theorem is a generalisation of that proved earlier by \textit{J. Q. Smith} [Ph. D. thesis, Warwick Univ. (1981)].
