The paper provides an excellent introduction to the contributions of \textit{G. Castelnuovo}, \textit{F. P. Cantelli}, and \textit{B. de Finetti} to probability theory. A less detailed review of the works by \textit{C. E. Bonferroni} and \textit{F. G. Tricomi} is also given. The paper is most valuable since the history of the Italian probability school is not so well-known.
