The excitation of a nerve fibre that is assumed to be composed of a fluid core enclosed by a flexible membrane and surrounded by a second fluid is considered. The electrohydrodynamical equations are established and after making a number of approximations self-similar solutions are obtained. Particular reference is made to experiments with crab and squid axons but no numerical results are presented.
